Based on the evaluation theory in functional discourse analysis, this essay analyzes the corpus of news coverage of Janette Howard, Australia’s first lady before the Sydney Morning Herald. Through the profound analysis of the article Janette Howard’s Great Expectations, this article explores the author’s evaluation value and social ideology embodied in the article and its impact on the readers, and illustrates the practicality and practical significance of the evaluation theory.
