本文的主要论点是,艺术在实现历史进步中具有重要的作用,历史进步是未来艺术兴盛的必要条件。我们在经济史方面之所以取得进步,是因为我们通过创新合作提高了我们的劳动生产率。然而,我们因此而获得的闲暇时间必须充满有意义的活动。艺术在这方面须发挥核心作用。为了证明这一点,作者必须确定何谓艺术。作者认为,艺术与游戏是堂兄弟。艺术与游戏事实上具有一个共同的祖先:节目。二者确实根据自己发明的规则自由地进行。这就是艺术和游戏使我们产生了非同寻常的、神一般的愉悦的原因所在。
The main thesis of this article is that art plays an important role in achieving historical progress. Historical progress is a necessary condition for the future prosperity of art. The reason we made progress in economic history is because we have increased our labor productivity through innovative cooperation. However, the leisure time we receive must therefore be full of meaningful activity. Art needs to play a central role in this regard. To prove this, the author must determine what art is. The author believes that art and games are cousins. Art and games in fact have a common ancestor: the show. The two are indeed free to proceed according to the rules of their own invention. This is why art and games have produced us extraordinary, god-like pleasures.
