Ephedrine has two asymmetric carbon atoms and thus has four optical isomers. They have different pharmacological effects and metabolites in the body. Existing methods of in vivo drug analysis can only determine the total amount of ephedrine in plasma and the individual amounts of each optical isomer can not be determined separately.
