This article describes the early engine tests that led to the development of a coal-fired medium-speed diesel engine. The development was carried out on a 900 r / min, 216 mm bore, two-stroke diesel engine manufactured by GM’s Electric Power Unit (EMD). After minimal modification, the machine worked with coal slurry mixed with 50% (by mass) pulverized coal and water for several hours. The operation of the engine is based on the ignition of the diesel engine to ignite the main fuel - coal slurry to achieve this way. A standard set of pump-nozzle devices were only modified locally to increase the gap between the injection pump and the tip of the nozzle. Under the evaluated engine operating conditions, coal has lower combustion efficiency and NO x emissions and higher particulate emissions than diesel. These initial results, obtained without optimizing the coal slurry system, indicate that there is potential for using coal slurry fuel.
