南阳地跨伏牛、桐柏两大山脉,气候温和,雨量适宜.伏牛山位于豫西山区南部;桐柏山位于豫南山区西部,山势险峻,绵亘起伏.伏牛山主脉老界岭平均海拔一千五百米,老君山、玉皇顶海拔在二千米以上;桐柏山主脉太白顶平均海拔一千多米.全区境内两大山脉成为黄河、长江、淮河三大水系的分水岭,也是南北气流运行的天然屏障.由于地貌类型和气候类型多姿多态,蕴藏着十分丰富的珍丛异产名贵药材,使南阳成为盛产中药材的天然宝库.
