Color words almost exist in any language in the world.However,the connotation of color words obviously varies from one language to another because of the language habits,historical background,traditional customs,geographical surroundings,national psychology,and other factors.The different cultures between Chinese and western countries also result in different symbolic meanings of color words.Being as a basic color word,color red's different semantic meanings of Chinese and English may also lead to the people's different comprehension to the metaphoric and pragmatic meaning.So it is of super necessary for language learners to have a good understanding of those differences so that we can transcend the cultural barriers.In this paper,a comparison of the extended and abstract meaning of Chinese and English color red is given,and also a brief analysis of the reasons is given.In the first part,a brief introduction of G.Leech's seven types of meaning are introduced,and three types:conceptual meaning,social meaning and connotative meaning will be the basis of the analysis.The second and the third part are the main parts,the similarities and differences of color red between English and Chinese will be discussed,and also the main reasons of the differences.The fifth part ends the thesis with an emphasis of the importance of color words analysis.
