The normal metabolism of bone involves a variety of metal ions, with the application of rare earth, through the environment and through the food chain and other channels into the human body also increased the amount of rare earth, and relatively rich in bone tissue and difficult to discharge; due to rare earth and calcium ions Similarities, they will intervene and regulate the formation and reconstruction of bone. On the one hand, rare earths are envisioned as drugs for the treatment of bone diseases and, on the other hand, they have a negative effect on bone metabolism. Therefore, the medicinal properties and safety of rare earth are increasingly becoming the concerns of people. In this paper, we reviewed the research progress of rare earth ions on bone metabolism and discussed their medicinal and safety issues, mainly from the following three aspects: (1) Differentiation and functional expression of osteoblasts and osteoclasts by rare earth ions (2) Effects of rare earth ions on osteogenic differentiation and adipogenic differentiation of bone marrow stromal cells; (3) Effects of rare earth ions on bone mineral phase in animals. In addition, the shortcomings of this research area and the research directions that should be strengthened in the future are also pointed out.
