The delta factor appears to be a defective virus that must be replicated with the aid of HBV. In acutely infected chimpanzees and human blood, the delta antigen is present in the HBS-Ag-encapsulated particles, which contain a small RNA that is different from HBV-DNA and may be the genome of the delta antigen. Early epidemiological studies have shown that the δ factor is globally distributed but predominates in the Mediterranean. It has recently been found that there is a high prevalence of delta infection in Senegal, Gabon and Venezuela, indicating that the δ-factor distribution is much broader than in the past. Because delta-factor is transmitted together with HBV through the bloodstream or its products, it is most susceptible to drug addicts who receive multiple recipients and intravenous medications.
