  第二部分: 阅读理解
  阅读下列短文,从每篇短文后所给各题的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳答案。
  A
Our town is in the eastern part of our country. Once a year, we elect a girl to show how beautiful and great our town is. All the girls are eager to get this position in an effort to become popular.
It was not an easy choice this year, since there were eight girls to choose from. The elder judge finally decided that either Sara or May would get the position. Both girls were beautiful with extraordinary appearance. Besides, they had a good education and cared about how pollution had a bad effect on the earth. Most important, both girls got up early to eat eggs at their breakfast. Eggs were important to people of the east because our economy depended mainly on the production of eggs.
“Either girl will win,” my father said. “But someone will cry in the end.”
“Either will be fine,” I said. “They are both great girls.”
The final round was held at the east edge of our town. Sara lived nearby so she did not need to get up early to arrive. However, she was the first person there. “You know what they say about the early bird,” she said with a smile.
However, May arrived fifteen minutes late to the competition. “It’s the taxi driver’s fault,” she said. “I told him to head east, but he was in one ear and thought I said Bread Cheese.” You know, Bread Cheese was the name of our neighboring town.
I thought May would certainly lose because she was late, but to my surprise, she turned out to be this year’s winner. The judges liked her answer to their last question, “If you could have anything in the world, what would it be?” Sara had replied, “World peace.” May, on the other hand, said, “Better market to have our eggs sell well.”
  36. Why was it difficult to make a choice this year?
  A. All the girls had extraordinary apperarance.
  B. There were more girls to choose from than in the past.
  C. All the girls wanted to get the position.
  D. The judges couldn’t agree with each other.
  37. By saying “You know what they say about the early bird” Sara meant that_______.
  A. she liked the bird getting up early very much
  B. she was sure that she would succeed
  C. she lived nearby, so she should get there early
  D. she had a good command of the language
  38. Why was May chosen in the end?
  A. Because her answer was cleverer and exact.
  B. Because she gave a different answer from Sara’s.
  C. Because she looked more beautiful than Sara.
  D. Because her answer was more practical than Sara’s.
  39. According to the passage, which of the following maps is correct?

  Break Your Bad Mood
Having one of those days or weeks—when everything seems to annoy you? Even if you do nothing about it, your bad mood will probably go away after some time. But with a little effort, you can forget it much faster—often within a day or two.
  Walk it off
Exercise is the most popular bad-mood buster(消除者). A person who’s in a bad mood has low energy and high tension. Taking a fast ten-minute walk, or doing some quick exercises can do wonders towards changing that bad mood.
  Tune it out
Listening to your favorite music for a while can also make tension go away quickly, because music starts associations with past positive experiences we’ve had.
  Give yourself a pep(鼓励的) talk
Stop and listen to what’s on your mind. Bad moods are often started by too many negative thoughts. Write them all down on paper-the pessimistic(悲观的)messages you’ve been giving yourself and then give optimistic answers.(“I still don’t have a job.” vs “I have two interviews next week.”)
  Reduce your stress
Relaxation techniques are wonderful moodlifters. These include deep breathing, stretching and visualizing(想像), all of which sound complicated but aren’t. One easy way to visualize: close your eyes and picture a favorite place, such as the beach. Another simple way to be against distress(痛苦) is to make a to-do list. One reason for being in a bad mood is feeling you have no options(选择权). By taking control over certain areas, you realize you’re not helpless. You can make changes in your mood and life.
Avoide things that won’t improve your mood
TV may not help much: You need to increase your energy level and stimulate your mind—something that the TV show “Neighbors” won’t do. And before you reach for that piece of cake and coffee, think about how mood and food are linked. Sugar and caffeine contribute to depressed moods. A better choice? Research shows that carbohydrates, such as potatoes and pasta(意大利面食), produce a calming effect on people who have a desire for them.
  40. We learn from the text that it might get rid of a bad mood__________.
  A. to do nothing about it
  B. to take a long walk on the bench
  C. to do some exercises with light music
  D. to talk about it to neighbors
  41. Why is it suggested that you close your eyes and picture the beach?
  A. It is not complicated to do so.
  B. It is an area which can be easily controlled.
  C. It helps beat a bad mood.
  D. It brings us a new technique.
  42. TV may not improve your mood because_______.
  A. it someimes shows what happens around you
  B. it keeps you sitting without moving
  C. it reminds you of eating and drinking
  D. it produces calming effect
  43. This text most probably appears in_______.
  A. a book on physical exercises
  B. a doctor’s handbook
  C. a public notice
  D.a popular magazine

  C
I strongly believe that it is rather important to be a good listener. And although I have become a better listener than I was ten years ago, I have to admit I’m still only an adequate(可以胜任的) listener.
Effective listening is more than simply avoiding the bad habit of interrupting others while they are speaking or finishing their sentences. It’s being content to listen to the entire thought of someone rather than waiting impatiently for your chance to respond. In some ways, the way we fail to listen is symbol of the way we live. We often treat communication as if it were a race. It’s almost like the case that our goal is to have no gaps(间隙) between the conclusion of the sentence of the son we are speaking with and the beginning of our own. My wife and I were recently at a café having lunch, overhearing the conversations around us. It seemed that no one was really listening to one another; instead they were taking turns not listening to one another. I asked my wife if I still did the same thing. With a smile on her face she said, “Only sometimes.”
Slowing down your responses and becoming a better listener helps you in becoming a more peaceful person. It takes pressure from you. If you think about it, you’ll notice that it takes large amount of energy and is very stressful to be sitting at the edge of your seat trying to guess what the person in front of you (or on the telephone) is going to say so that you can fire back your response. But as you wait for the person you are communicating with to finish, as you simply listen more carefully to what is being said, you’ll notice that the pressure you feel is off. You will immediately feel more relaxed, and so will the people you are talking to. They will feel safe in slowing down their own responses because they won’t feel in competition with you for “air time”! Not only will becoming a better listener make you a more patient person, it will also improve the quality of your relationships. Everyone loves to talk to someone who truly listens to what they are saying.
  44. According to the passage, an effective listener should_______.
  A. accept the speaker’s thought critically
  B. overhear the conversations around us
  C. respond to the speaker now and then
  D. listen to the speaker patiently
  45. When talking with others, you will feel relaxed by_______.
  A. sitting at the edge of the seat
  B. slowing down your responses
  C. guessing the speaker’s thought
  D. responding to the speaker completely
  46. The writer’s wife’s words imply that sometimes the writer_______.
  A. overhears other people’s conversations
  B. may enter a café to have lunch
  C. waits patiently for his chance to respond
  D. does not really listen to others’ statement

  D
The other day in school we were discussing jobs. Our teacher Mrs. Bolt said that vocations were very important and that it was never too early to think about your life’s work. Most of the young boys really weren’t too sure about what they wanted to be. Bolt asked me, I replied, “A truck driver.”
“A truck driver,” repeated Mrs. Bolt. “Why do you want to be a truck driver, Kenneth?”
“Because truck drivers are always on the move. They do not have to sit at desks all day. They are out on the road and they see a lot of the country. The pay is good, too. And they never have any homework.”
  The class laughed.
“Well, Kenneth,” answered Mrs. Bolt. “You certainly sound enthusiastic(热心的). I guessed that you don’t like sitting at a desk or doing homework. Is that correct, Kenneth?”“Yes, I guess so.” I said.
“Well, since you are so interested in becoming a truck driver, I think you should look into the field a little further. I want you to go to the library and take out a book on truck driving. And I want you to write a book report on it and hand it in at the end of the month.” “That’s the last time I’ll ever tell anybody my secret ambition(抱负)!”
  47. The underlined word vocation in the passage means_______.
  A. studies B. job
  C. holidays D. ambitions
  48. Why did Mrs. Bolt suggest that Kenneth write a book report?
  A. Because she wanted him to learn about the other side of truck driving.
  B. Because she was angry with him.
  C. Because she was not quite satisfied with the reasons he gave.
  D. Because she wanted the whole class not to follow his example.
  49. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
  A. Truck drivers are well paid.
  B. Most boys in the class want to be truck drivers.
  C. Mrs. Bolt wanted Kenneth to write a book report.
  D. It seemed as if Kenneth did not enjoy sitting at a desk or doing his lessons.
  50. Why wouldn’t Kenneth tell about his ambition any more?
  A. Because he didn’t think his ambition could come true.
  B. Because he just got more homework to do after he told Mrs. Bolt what he would like to be.
  C. Because he was laughed at by the whole class.
  D. Because he would not become a truck driver any more.
  51. Mrs. Bolt_______.
  A. was unkind to Kenneth
  B. was unfit for her work
  C. was an experienced teacher

Soon they found themselves in a thick fog. Mark was sure they would be hit by a big ship. Fortunately he saw a large buoy(浮标) through the fog and decided to tie the boat to it for safety. As he was getting onto the buoy, however, he dropped the wet rope. The boat moved away in the fog carrying John, who did not know how to use the radio. He drifted about and was not seen until twelve hours later.
Mark spent the night on the buoy. In the early morning he fell asleep. He was having a bad dream when a shout woke him up. A ship, the Good Hope, came up and he climbed onto it and thanked the captain. B. Dan was in some other place

  A. he could spend the night on it while John was looking for help
