Boeing has developed an advanced wing made from composite materials that, due to the difficult processing of such materials, has been researching to provide a simpler and lower cost process. As a result, a new geometry drill was developed and a patented one-step drilling process. It replaces the expensive old process that needs to be processed in three steps. The contract recently completed by the Boeing Company Defense and Space Group is to develop a new wing for the Grumman A-6 attack aircraft to replace the original aluminum wing. The new program is made of carbon fiber composites and titanium. According to the new design, fastening holes must be drilled in both carbon and titanium during the assembly process. With conventional manufacturing processes, machining two different materials requires different tool materials and geometry parameters and different drilling speeds to achieve good results.
