Magnesium, a metallocoenzyme of animal, is closely related to the action of cells to bind ATPase and thus is the main factor that sodium is pumped out from the cell and potassium is pumped into the cell. The increase or decrease of cell magnesium can change the resting membrane Potential and cause repolarization disorder, causing arrhythmia and eventually cell death. It is now clear that hypomagnesemia is associated with refractory arrhythmia and the potential fatalness of digitalis poisoning, and hypomagnesemia is cited as a cause of sudden death. Some authors believe that magnesium is a “hard water protection factor” found in epidemiological studies of coronary heart disease.
