Chapter I Origins of the World Trade Organization Section I A Brief History of the GATT The predecessor of the WTO was the World Trade Organization (GATT) following World War II, following the establishment of other newly established multilateral organizations dedicated to promoting international economic cooperation, in particular the “Bretton Woods” Organizations, now the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund were established after the interim establishment.
