The state-run Jena Carl Zeiss consortium maintains steady scientific, technological and economic relations with 35 research and production units in socialist countries. The development of import and export trade in these countries is based on long-term trade agreements and various specialized cooperation contracts. The Soviet Union is the most important foreign trade partner.
