Introduction The Devonian basement in the Early Devonian of Newfoundland provides an excellent example of the coexistence of two magmatic components, gabbro and granite, with a smaller amount of transitional material. It appears to be representative of many of the Endemic (Silurian-Devonian) plutonic rocks that originate throughout the Appalachian Mountains (Speer et al., 1980; Wones 1980; Fyffe 1980; Strong 1980) There are many calcium-alkaline features, but they are basically different from the typical calcium-alkaline rocks in the Pacific Rim (see Wones 1980).
