从现代制造技术的发展和特点出发，分析当今坐标测量机的发展现状和存在的问题，提出虚拟坐标测量机的设计思想，给出虚拟坐标测量机的定义和作用，对虚拟坐标测量机的工作过程作了初步设计，对其将具有的特点作出分析。可以预计，虚拟坐标测量机将具有广阔的前景。
