On February 1, 1941, the famous novelist Ernest Hemingway and his new wife, Martha Gelherh, were invited by the Pacific Mail and the Corrill magazines to visit China to examine the Chiang Kai-shek government’s Day operations to determine whether this war will affect the interests of the United States in the Far East. By Hawaii, Hong Kong, Shaoguan, Guilin, Hemingway couple arrived in Chongqing, China’s wartime capital, is already in May. Hemingway’s couple received a meeting with Chiang Kai-shek after having rested for two weeks at a friend’s house. The meeting was conducted in the form of a private dinner with only four persons: Chiang Kai-shek, Soong Mei-ling, Hemingway and Martha. Martha recalled at a private banquet Chiang Kai-shek asked Hemingway what he thought of some articles on Chinese Communists published in the Western press. Hemingway said he did not read these articles, said no way. Chiang Kai-shek then began his chatter lobbying: “Communists are savvy propagandists but have no combat capability.”
