《骷髅格》应即佛教、道教仪式中的“叹骷髅”一类经忏吟唱的格范,它源于佛教密宗的“髑髅法”,最早用于佛教诵经,后来道教仪式、道情、宝卷、散曲、戏曲等纷纷采用。它初为诗赞系,重视四声和平仄,后来吸收了南北曲和民间音乐的成分。《骷髅格》的形成时间最迟不晚于金代,很可能即出自全真教道士之手。我国曲谱的基本原则是从吟诵佛经开始奠定的。从这个意义上可以说,《骷髅格》对曲谱的创立产生过重大影响。
