OBJECTIVE: To provide a theoretical basis for the management of infection in grass-roots hospitals through the investigation of the current status of reusable materials (pipes). Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted on the management of reusable medical articles (pipelines) in 40 clinical departments of 10 secondary and above medical institutions in Shanghai. In February 2007, microbiological surveillance of reusable medical articles was conducted. Results: There were 334 pipelines in total, of which 218 were secondary hospitals, with 34 colonies exceeding the standard, accounting for 10.17%. There were 116 tertiary hospitals with 7 colonies exceeding 2.09%. Conclusion: Establishing a management system for reusable medical supplies and standard operating procedures can effectively prevent nosocomial infections.
