All diesel locomotives must be equipped with cooling devices to dissipate the unwanted, but technically unavoidable, heat generated in locomotive operation. The optimum design and application of this type of cooling unit requires consideration and adjustment of all the influencing factors. These factors include both thermodynamic and fluid technology issues, but also design, materials, application of maintenance techniques, and economic issues. The practice of using diesel locomotives has proved that the problems in the application of cooling devices have a great influence on the performance, reliability and service life.
