这篇文章是George Smith和Susan Bender教授参加2008年北美考古学年会发言稿,可以被看作部分北美考古学家对于当下考古教育改革的最新呼声。通过作者对于北美考古学会围绕考古教育改革所做工作回顾,我们可以看到,自上个世纪90年代以来,考古学在日益走向繁荣的同时,学科本身也出现了前所未有的新情况和新问题:考古学出现了众多的分支学科,它要求考古教学不断增加新的技术性或技能性课程;考古实践工作远远超出考古学学科理论的发展速度,即理论大大落后于实践;公众对于考古知识需求不断扩大,对于考古活动的参与和考古资料的阐释意愿日益增强;经济活动与考古遗产保护、文物市场与文化遗产管理矛盾越来越尖锐,迫切需要以培养管理和精英阶层为己任的考古教学和科研单位对此做出回应,等等。对比我国的现实情况,这些问题实际上也正在显现或已经不同程度存在着,其严重性甚至已经到了不能予以忽视的程度,比如,大学通识教育理念的增强与专业教育课时增加之间的矛盾,新增考古学及博物馆学专业与师资力量不均衡之间的矛盾,媒体在公众教育和娱乐节目中的猎奇性和功利性误导,日益扩大的考古实物和资料的积累与保存、管理之间的矛盾,等等,都是应该引起我们关注的迫切问题。而这一切,最终有赖于大学考古教育的意识与回应。它山之石,可以攻玉。希望通过本文的译介,引起国内考古学理论界和考古遗产管理层对于大学考古教育的关注。
This article is a speech by George Smith and Professor Susan Bender at the 2008 North American Archeology Annual Meeting and can be seen as the latest voice of some North American archaeologists on the current archeology education reform.
