We will first focus on Mao Zedong’s philosophical status based on Western standards and then China’s standards. First of all, the usual Western view seems to be that Mao essentially can not be considered as a philosopher, at best, a second-rate or third-rate philosopher. Or rather, he is just a revolutionary man who studies his work extensively because of his political excellence. The reason for this view seems to be that Mao’s writings (including the four philosophical writings) do not meet the criteria of Western philosophy. However, what is the standard of Western philosophy? The West does not have a specific definition of “philosophy” or “philosopher”
