“Have you ever been out on a boat and felt it lifted up by a wave? Or have you jumped in the water and felt the rush of energy as waves came over you?” asked Jamie Taylor of the Wave Energy Group at the University of Edinburgh. “There is certainly a lot of energy in waves,” he said.
Scientists are working to use that energy to make electricity. Most waves are created when winds blow across the ocean. “The wind starts out by making little ripples, but if they keep on blowing, those ripples get bigger and bigger and turn into waves,” Taylor said. “Waves are one of natures ways of picking up energy and then sending it off on a journey.”
When waves come toward the shore, people can set up darns to block the water and send it through a large wheel called a turbine (涡轮机). The turbine can then power an electrical generator to produce electricity.
“The resource is huge,” said Janet Swain of the World Watch Institute. “We will never run out of wave power.” Besides, wave energy does not create the same pollution as other energy sources, such as oil or coal. Oceans cover threequarters of the Earths surface that would make wave power seem ideal for creating energy throughout the world, though there are some weak points yet to overcome.
Swain said that wave power still costs too much money. She also said that its effects on sea animals are still unknown. What is more, wave power could affect fishing and boat traffic.
Traditional sources of energy like oil and gas may someday run out. “Demand for energy to power our TVs and computers, drive our cars, and heat and cool our homes is rising rapidly throughout the world,” Swain said. In the future when you turn on a light, an ocean wave could be providing the electricity! 39. The writer uses the two questions at the beginning of the passage to .

A state funeral for Polands President Lech Kaczynski and his wife, Maria, has taken place with the absence of many world leaders whose travel plans were stopped by the spread of volcanic ash that has covered Europe.
The couples bodies were flown from Warsaw to Krakow for the traditional ceremony and burial in the nearby Wawel Cathedral, the final resting place for Polands kings, poets and statesmen, including General Wladyslaw Sikorski, the exiled (流亡的) World War Two leader who died in a mysterious plane crash off Gibraltar in 1943.
US President Barack Obama, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel were among the leaders who cancelled at the last minute because of the expanding volcanic ash cloud, dangerous to airplane engines. Nearly all of the continents airports have been closed since late on Thursday.
“All the French people will be, in their thoughts, with the Polish people,” Mr. Sarkozy said in a letter sent to acting president Bronislaw Komorowski expressing his regret for being unable to attend.
The volcanic ash did not discourage everyone. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev flew by plane from Moscow for the funeral. His presence was a further sign of the warming ties between the two countries, which had been tense for centuries, and recently because of communism and the 1940 Katyn murder. Others, including the leaders of Baltic and Balkan states, came by car for the stately event.
Despite the absence of global high officials, no one said the funeral should be postponed. “I wouldnt move the funeral,” said Bartek Kargol, who was among thousands of people waiting for the event in Krakow. “This event is for our president.” Almost all of the handson equipment in the elephant encounter was broken and no longer working. Although the zoo did put up signs as an apology, it continued to add to the feeling that the zoo is approaching death. The one exhibit that did not fail to impress were the African Penguins. Their habitat was well built. The lion, bear, and tiger were also easy to watch. A favorite among the kids was clearly the monkeys who were very active and eager to put on a show.
The Tropical Rainforest did a very good job creating a special atmosphere. The cafe served very good food and had lovely indoor and outdoor areas for eating. They are currently redesigning the Sea Lion exhibit, so the Sea Lions were not available for viewing while we were there. All things considered, the Tulsa Zoo is still the best zoo in our area, but I would only award it three out of five stars.
  47. Seeing several highlights in the Tulsa Zoo, the author .
  A. felt very excited
  B. was a little frightened
  C. was not satisfied with them
  D. thought it was worth seeing
  48. Why did the author think it was a different case with the jaguar?
  A. Because the jaguar was friendly to the kangaroo and visitors.
  B. Because the zoo didnt use a sign to show if the jaguar was there.
  C. Because the jaguar is very dangerous compared with other animals.
  D. Because the jaguar had disappeared when the author got there.
  49. What can be concluded from this passage?
  A. The Tulsa Zoo will be expanded to become the largest zoo in the US.
  B. The author intended to visit the Sea Lion exhibit before going there.
  C. The author felt that the Tulsa Zoo will close soon.
  D. The Tulsa Zoo was very popular when the author was young.
  50. What does the author think of the Tulsa Zoo in general?
  A. She thinks nothing of it.
  B. It is the best zoo in the US.
  C. She thinks very poorly of it.
  D. It is a first class zoo in her area.

  To whom it may concern,
Im writing to you to apply for a school loan. As a freshman from the English Department, I have much financial difficulty in continuing my study.
There are five members in my family. My father is the only breadwinner of the whole family while my mother was laid off two years ago. My grandmother has been suffering a chronic illness for more than five years. My younger brother is now studying in a high middle school. I took part time jobs during the summer vacation, but what I have earned is far from enough for me to pay the required tuition fees. In order to continue my study, I have to apply for a school loan.
If my request is granted, I will make good use of the money and put my heart into study. I will definitely pay back the loan according to the requirements. I hope that you will consider my application. Looking forward to your reply. (152 words)
  Yours sincerely,
  LiMing
