湖北省江陵县北约5公里的纪南城,是东周时代楚国的郢都故址,当时称为纪郢。“楚之郢都,车毂击,民肩摩,市路相排突,号为朝衣鲜而暮衣蔽也”(桓谭:《新论》),纪南城曾经是一座十分繁华的大都市,是我国东周时代最大的城市之一。当年的郢都,不但是楚国的政治、军事、文化中心,而且是楚国的经济中心。今日的郢都故址,盛产水稻、油菜和各种鱼类、家禽。纪南城一带是今江陵县著名的农业生产基地,是富足的鱼米之乡。纪南城及其周围的农业生产有十分悠久的历史,早在新石器时代,这里就有以种植水稻为主,以养殖为辅
