汉画像石是嵌饰祠堂和墓室的一种类似于壁画的装饰物,它也是一种特殊的建筑材料。其最初呈现的形式可能是自然的原石雕刻和彩绘雕刻。从历史角度来看,大多数的汉画像石被彩绘过是不容否认的事实。考古发掘证明,相当一部分墓门画像石在完成雕刻以后,其上面的涂饰有不同的颜色,如河南南阳赵寨砖瓦厂画像石、唐河电厂汉墓画像石、唐河针织厂二号墓画像石、陕西神木大保当汉墓画像石以及山东沂南、淄博、邹平和山西的离石、江苏徐州青山白集、重庆合川沙坪等画像石上的色彩残留都说明了汉画像石彩绘的真实存在。
