The United States Air Force Armament Department is conducting a long and painstaking study of the feasibility of a lidar-equipped laser radar at Eglin AFB in order to detect and attack active targets and fixed targets of great value. The submarine mission is part of a project called “Killback Carbine / Throw Javelin,” jointly sponsored by the Air Force’s Armaments Department and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. The objective of this mission is to give the cruise missile a new autonomous capability to detect and attack moving targets, whether moving or moving, and fixed targets of great value with unknown coordinates. This is accomplished through state-of-the-art CO2 laser and target detection / cryptographic processing, as well as “smart” sub-missiles developed for other programs such as the US Air Force’s Antitank Fleet Initiative (WAAM). Where these sub-missiles will be put on cruise bombs near the target while the bombs continue to fly to other targets.
