Recent immunohistological and radioimmunoassay studies have shown that neuron-specific enolase (NSE) is present in some amine precursor uptake decarboxylated tumors, including island cell carcinoma, pheochromocytoma (PHE), and medullary thyroid carcinoma. In addition, elevated serum NSE levels are also seen in small cell lung cancer and neuroblastoma. To clarify the issue of using serum NSE as a tumor marker, the authors measured serum NSE levels in benign and malignant PHE patients and also measured two benign PHEs.
