The Bible Genesis says: “God says there is light and there is light.” This sentence shows the importance of light to all things in the world. Similarly, in the study of Western oil paintings, light also plays an extremely important role. The use of light in paintings extends to Impressionism. Since the expression of light in later paintings is no longer the mainstream, the oil paintings starting with Modernism are beyond the scope of the article. This paper elaborates the difference and development of light use in each stage from two stages. From the Renaissance to the eighteenth century. The use of light at this time emphasizes an autonomous design. From the eighteenth century to impressionism. The painter at this stage began to express the light itself, showing the light of reality rather than merely satisfying the light as the vassal of the object.
