Gossypol is being widely studied as a male contraceptive. Recent studies have shown its antiviral and ant cone activity. The antifeeding properties of gossypol are thought to result as a result of the inhibition of sperm lactate dehydrogenase X activity. Plasmodium, like sperm cells, relies mainly on anaerobic glycolysis.
