We have developed AISI grades 304 and 316 stainless steels, which, in addition to their good mechanical properties, have the intergranular corrosion resistance of 304L and 316L steels. With a detailed knowledge of the relative effects of C and N on mechanical properties and intergranular corrosion resistance, it is basically possible to develop these stainless steel grades which we call “Optimized.” This paper compares not only the mechanical properties of the “optimized” stainless steels described above with the ASM F specifications but also describes how to determine the “optimum” steel composition specifications. Obviously, the grade of steel is very suitable for nuclear reactor applications.
