早在《尚书·大甲篇》即有言:“顾諟天之明命。”意思是说: 要时常想到伟大的上天所赋予给你的德性。商的创立者汤也在《盘铭》上留下“荀日新,日日新,又日新”的警句来希望后人每天都能在道德修养上有所进步。战国著名的学者荀况更专门著《修身》一篇,教人以治气、养心之术,好礼、正身之道。直到清末,名臣曾国藩也不忘在家书、文函上提醒后辈和下属,莫要忘了立世之本。
