《飞地》将镜头对准了四川大凉山区,聚焦于村民苏甘以布以及有着不同教师、志愿者来往穿梭的村办小学。在这个封闭偏远的地区,学校是唯一可能与外界发生碰撞交流的所在。这里几乎与世隔绝,村民绝大部分不会讲也听不懂汉语,2012年才通电;问孩子们现任领导人是谁,他们回答:毛泽东。苏甘以布曾出去打过工,跟人打架脑子受伤后回到家乡,被目为疯子。他喜欢看新闻联播,希望能改变村庄现状。因为从小没受过教育,有时和小孩子们一起上课,希望他们能好好学习,为社会和国家贡献力量。他也会在喝醉酒后痛哭,说一个连自己名字都认不得的人有什么用,17岁以后就觉得活在世上毫无意义。
