西笑 指对帝都的仰慕和对功名的渴望。古代多以长安为都城,长安在西。对西而笑意味着自己对仕途通达的渴望。桓谭《新论·祛蔽》中有这样一句话:“人闻长安乐,则出门向西而笑,知肉味美则对屠门而大嚼。”李白一生积极有为,抱负远大,来到长安总想有番作为。但在长安却受到权贵们的排挤,而唐玄宗也只不过是把他作为宫廷御用诗人罢了,后不得不愤愤离开长安。所谓“十年罢西笑,揽镜如秋霜”(李白《留别曹南群官之江南》),悲愤之情真是溢于言表。后来“西笑”也就成了仰慕帝都和渴望功名富贵的代名词。
