Objective To investigate the levels of serum interleukin-18 (IL-18) and soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sV-CAM-1) in patients with chronic renal failure (uremia) and their clinical significance. Methods Serum levels of IL-18 and sVCAM-1 were measured before and 10 days after maintenance hemodialysis in 10 patients with chronic renal failure (uremia) by ELISA, and compared with the normal control group. Results Serum levels of IL-18 and sVCAM-1 in patients with chronic renal failure (uremia) were significantly higher than those in the control group before treatment; the levels of IL-18 and sVCAM-1 in patients with chronic renal insufficiency (uremia) were significantly higher than those before treatment after 10 days of treatment. Conclusions High levels of IL-18 and sVCAM-1 may be involved in the pathogenesis of chronic renal insufficiency (uremia) and may be involved in the development of complications associated with dialysis.
