The United States was originally the top trader of high-tech products. It has been downgraded since the 1980s. The value of exports in manufacturing has fallen from 28% in 1970 to 23% in 1985; the annual trade surplus has reached 23.6 billion since the end of the 1970s. The U.S. dollar fell to only 4 billion U.S. dollars, while exports from Japan and Western European countries increased. This article explores the reasons for the decline in the U.S.-Gaotech product trade from prosperity, and discusses U.S. efforts and prospects to reverse the situation.
