Recently, Japanese researchers developed a drought-tolerant rice through genetic modification. The root of this rice can deeply penetrate the soil to absorb water and grow under drought conditions. The research team led by Yuko Yuko of the Japan Institute of Agricultural Biological Resources said that the roots of rice are stretched horizontally so that the roots in the soil are very shallow while that of the uprooted rice is very deep.
