往百度搜索引擎里输入“公共艺术”这个词可以找到两千五百九十万(25,900,000)个相关结果。查阅资料可知,我国的一些高校早在21世纪初就设立了公共艺术专业,2008年这一专业获得了教育部的正式批准,以公共艺术为名称的教材随即面世。2009上海大学创办了《公共艺术》杂志。如今,全国很多高校都设立了公共艺术专业。由此看来,公共艺术作为一个学科已经有着数年的历史,并呈现出蓬勃兴旺的良好势头。但是,如果我们阅读这类著作,考察这一专业的课程设置,就会发现公共艺术的概念和专业范围是宽泛无边、模糊不清的。无论是理论知识,还是创作技能,公共艺术都没有国画、油画、版画和雕塑等传统艺术专业那样有着确定的技术标准,即使与装置艺术、行为艺术、环境艺术和数字艺术等新型艺术门类相比,公共艺术也没有专门的形式语言要求。
