This article studies the use of English relative clause guidewords. The author first describes the distribution of the two leading words that and wh-components in English relational clauses, pointing out that while most of the relational clauses can be led by that and wh-components, some of the relational clauses can only be represented by A guide word (that or wh-component) leads. In order to explain the differences in distribution, this paper introduces the study of “degree relation clauses” and explains the syntactic and semantic differences between these kind of relation clauses and general limited relation clauses. Finally, the author applies these studies to explain the choice of leading words. The result shows that all the relation clauses that can only be guided by that have the characteristics of “degree relation clauses”, all of which are “degree relation clauses”.
