The term “cytoprotection” of the stomach means preventing gastric mucosal damage by neutralizing or inhibiting mechanisms other than gastric acid secretion. To demonstrate cytoprotection, the ability of non-antisecretory doses of antisecretory or non-antisecretory drugs to protect the gastric mucosa must be demonstrated grossly and histologically. Its mechanism (mucus secretion, bicarbonate secretion, blood flow, etc.) is not yet elucidated, probably not because it is an indirect effect, and may not include an enhancement of an individual’s cells, but does include mechanisms that enhance the intrinsic gastric mucosal defense. Animal studies show that many drugs can provide this protective effect, some of which can accelerate ulcer healing in humans. However, this does not indicate that the mechanism that produces the protective effect must be the same as the mechanism that accelerates ulcer healing. Cytoprotective effects of endogenous and exogenous prostaglandins (PGs) have been studied in depth. This article reviews drugs that have cytoprotective effects other than PGs. Clinical medication
