The number of inpatients in American public mental hospitals plummeted from 550,000 in 1959 to 138,000 in 1980. This is mainly due to the improvement of the efficacy of the drug and the citizens’ requirement to adopt as little environmental control as possible. This article describes a new mental patient treatment system. The treatment system divides the original mental hospital into three components. The first part is a day hospital. There are two wards, each with 40-45 beds. There are senior psychiatric specialists, chief resident physicians, five resident physicians, nurses, assistants, social welfare workers, occupational and entertainment treatment physicians, and psychologists. Working hours are from 8am to 4pm and work 5 days a week. The second part covers 28-30 beds in the intensive care unit, with senior nurses or doctors, and nurses and assistants. It is medically responsible for doctors at day hospitals. weekly
