Due to the impact of the reduction in research funding, finally a fierce debate broke out in the United Kingdom: Has the British scientific foundation started an irreversible recession? The debate was caused by a shortage of nearly 40 million pounds (about 75 million U.S. dollars) in the 1991-1992 budget for research funding - which accounted for 10% of its budget. The Commission on Scientific and Engineering Research, which has played a key role, has agreed to cut back on the package. These include the possibility of shutting down the world-renowned Darthbury Laboratory, a center of Britain's major nuclear physics, which will result in the loss of 150 jobs at the laboratory's nuclear facility (NSF). For the nuclear infrastructure to operate, the Commission for Science and Engineering spends 6.5 million pounds a year.
