洋紫荆,属苏木科,是香港常见的乔木之一,1965年认定被采用为香港市花。香港常见的洋紫荆包括以下几个品种:1.洋紫荆(Bauhinia blakeana)2.红花羊蹄甲(Bauhinia purpurea)3.宫粉羊蹄甲(Bauhinia variegata)4.白花羊蹄甲(Bauhinia variegate var.candida)5.缺叶藤(Bauhinia championi)6.羊蹄甲藤(Bauhinia glauca)洋紫荆洋紫荆是香港最美丽的中等观赏常绿乔木之一,具有长而扩展或下垂的枝条。叶互生,单叶,两裂,长8至15cm,阔亦相同。叶先端深凹陷至叶长1/4～1/3,基部心形,边全缘。叶面光滑无毛,叶脉由基部成放射状。叶柄长至4.5cm。花期由11月初至3月,成总状花序,长至20cm。花多少不整齐,两性,芳香。花萼管状,有棱空;花冠有五枚分离而扩展的花瓣,深紫洋红色,最上者具有深色的条纹,近基部的边缘带白色。此品种甚少产生种子,是一不育的杂交种。繁殖可用扦插法及高空压条法;在遮蔽而有阳光的地方兼有良好的土壤环境下生长最佳。
