Compared with YAG lasers, CO 2 lasers have the advantage of being basically suitable for combat and therefore may appear on the 1990 horizon as the next generation of laser systems. France’s military laser research activities can be used to analyze the stage of technological development. This article will focus on recent activities including: Nd: YAG lasers currently under production and certainly needed. Mid- and long-term activity: The co_2 laser system appears to be promising, but does not include confrontational laser research and new laser basic research.
