功能性食品是指具有增强机体防御功能、调节生理功能、预防疾病、促进健康、延年益寿等相关生理特性的天然或经过加工的食品,基本等于我们通常所说的“保健品”。功能性食品中真正能够起到生理作用的成分,叫做生理活性成分。在美国,功能性食品被要求列出作用的活性成分及具体含量。即使已有几十年的食用历史证实有益于人体健康的食品,若无法提出科学的依据(即确认起作用的活性成分)和取得英国食品与药物管理局(FDA)的认可,也是不能在标签或使用说明书上宣称它们具有对身体健康有益的作用。有一点需要大家注意:任何添加非食品物原料成分的强化剂,或用中草药强化的食品、药膳均不属于功能性食品。
