Lockheed American will implement a large solid rocket motor based on a computer-aided tomography (CT) system for the detection of Navy Trident-2 (D-5) missiles. Such a system has far fewer engine defects than any of the existing methods. Lockheed is the lead contractor for the D-5 missile, which was developed by the U.S. Science and Engineering Corporation for this purpose. On the right is the 1/26 scale model of the device. A D-5 first-stage engine is placed on the rotary table. The X-ray source on the left side of the table scans the engine one by one.
