英山县位于鄂东大别山区,旱地(包括农作物用地和茶、桑、果、药等经济林用地)面积为166279亩,其中:农用旱地54279亩,经济林用地112000亩,占总土地面积的7.7％,占全县水土流失面,积40.95万亩的41.55％。这些旱地都具有严重水土流失的潜在危险。其原因有三: 一是旱地土壤成土母质绝大部分为风化花岗片麻岩,主要分布在低山丘陵的山岭、岗地和斜坡上,发育于花岗片麻岩的残积物和坡积物,岩层风化强烈,抗蚀抗冲力低; 二是我县地处江淮之间,雨量充沛,暴雨多,侵蚀力强。多年平均年降水量为1300～1400毫米,4～8月降雨量占全年降水量的70.15％,最大年降水量为2311.7毫米,最大日降雨量为330毫米。
