Oxygen saturation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) often decreases at night, and the mechanism has not been established and may involve respiratory muscle activity and reduced lung capacity, increased upper airway resistance and ventilatory-blood flow disorders. Can occur in all stages of sleep, but the lowest is in fast eye movement sleep period. The non-sedating tricyclic antidepressant protriptyline can reduce REM sleep time and therefore may improve the oxygen saturation in patients with COPD at night. To this end, the authors conducted a prospective, single-blind, controlled trial.
