The Ganges, the head of India’s four holy rivers, is revered by the people of India as “the mother of India.” Hindus regard the Ganges as the god of heaven (Shiva) sprinkling man’s dew. In the Indian epic Ramayana there is a story about the origins of the Ganges. The Ganges, famous for its deep religious and cultural connotations, attracts tourists from all over the world with its immense spiritual power. Earlier this year, I flew to the holy city of Varanasi from the world-famous Khajuraho, home of the “sex temple.” This ancient city is located in the middle reaches of the Ganges River in Uttar Pradesh, India, dating back to 6000 years ago. In the 7th century, our monk Xuanzang Dafu had visited here. In India, Varanasi is a sacred place in the heart of Hindus, just as Jerusalem is.
