一般意义上的托盘通常是指可以在联运过程中通用的平托盘。随着公路、铁路、水运、航空运输、联运等多种运输方式曰趋成熟,联运平托盘的应用越来越广泛,托盘运输已成为全球公认的与集装箱运输、驼背运输并驾齐驱的三种联运方式之一,受到了世界各国的高度关注与重视。据中国物流信息中心发布的数据,2004年我国社会物流总成本约占GDP的21．4%,较之发达国家相距10多个百分点。如何缩短这一差距?降低我国物流总成本,提高物流运作效率,推进托盘的标准化和社会化应用是一个不可忽视的重要环节。
