Based on the data of rural households surveyed in 1988 and 1995, this paper makes a comparative study of income growth and income gap between ethnic residents and Han residents. The results of the study show that although the per capita income of ethnic minorities increased from 1988 to 1995, their growth rate was significantly lower than that of Han residents, which led to the problem of the widening income gap between ethnic minorities and Han nationality. From the analysis of the income gap between ethnic minorities and Han nationality, we find that the root cause of the gap is that there are great differences in the regional distribution of the two groups of people. In order to fully demonstrate this finding, we conducted two analyzes. First, we narrowed down the scope of our analysis to sub-samples of Guizhou and Yunnan provinces. Secondly, we used the data collected from the whole country to analyze the data of autonomous prefectures, autonomous counties and Autonomous Towns The relationship between the proportion of ethnic minorities and per capita income has been estimated. Both of these analyzes support our argument.
