硝化作用在传统养鱼塘或氧化糖一般不会发生。但在连续暴气和搅拌的养鱼塘以及活性污泥系统中硝化作用却很剧烈。在组合养鱼塘系统，水从传统塘抽升到连续曝气与搅拌塘，在其中平均水力停留时间为５小时。在这种情况下硝化作用就不会象其它曝气塘那样发生。
